Gareth Metcalfe is an experienced Assistant Headteacher, who has written the fantastic set of problem solving and reasoning resources I See Maths.

A lot of the schools I support, use I See Maths to help pupils apply their mathematical skills and build conceptual understanding.

I See Problem Solving 2 e-books – Lower KS2, Upper KS2

I See Reasoning 7 e-books – KS1, Lower KS2, Upper KS2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6

Following on from the excellent reasoning courses Gareth ran in January, he will be running 4 half-day zoom sessions to support teachers and TA’s further.

Narrowing the Post-Lockdown Attainment Gap

  • Years 1 and 2 – May 19th  9:15am – 11:45am
  • Years 3 and 4 – May 19th 1:00pm – 3:30pm
  • Years 5 and 6 – May 26th 9:15am – 11:45am

In this session Gareth will look at how we can support the children most disadvantaged by the school closures to build a secure mathematical understanding. He will consider the key knowledge and skills that underpin mathematical learning, and a range of example games and activities will be shared to build these skills. This will support classroom teaching and can form the foundation for intervention support.

A Consistent Approach to Bar Modelling

  • May 26th 1:00pm – 3:30pm

In this session Gareth will look at a consistent whole-school approach to the use of bar modelling. We will see how the part-part-whole relationship and bar modelling can be introduced, using different equipment and learning experiences. Then, using a range of practical examples, we will see how bar modelling can be used to deepen understanding. We will also discuss how children will use bar modelling to represent their mathematical thinking.
